Child Sexual Abuse - Survivor Stories

Word of Caution

I identify myself as a survivor of multiple child abuse, some of which is not necessarily sexual. Sometimes it takes a non-sexualized phase of abuse and neglect to erode your defence mechanisms and self-esteem, so when the actual sexual violation occurs, you perceive it as punishment for being what you are – a worthless human being who didn’t finish her vegetables.

Before I begin I would like to forewarn you of the contents of this honest account of my past life. They will hurt at points, for those who are closely associated with me. I have spared no detail because I want you to know how real these experiences were, and also because I want fellow survivors to understand that it is both acceptable as well as cathartic to “vent” emotion to the fullest instead of “making it nice” for the public to digest.

If you feel triggered at any point, I request you to stop, take a deep breath and relax for a moment. If you feel you cannot go on reading, don’t force yourself to. Call a friend, make some tea, or go out for a walk. I write this today for everybody to know that I am living proof that survival and happiness are possible and attainable, no matter how hurtful the past might have been.

If you feel suicidal, or just want to talk , have a look at our referral list of therapists, counselors and in-house peer counselors who have been specially trained and sensitized to help you deal with your feelings more effectively.
